Iran Protests Russia's Sudden Freeze of S-300 Delivery

June 14, 2010 :: News

During the process of drafting resolutions to implement sanctions against Iran late last month, it was reported that Russia—presumably as part of the terms of their agreement at the UN—secured the lifting of sanctions on a few Russian companies accused of illegally selling arms to the Middle East in the last 5 years; additionally, it was reported that a loophole in the sanctions resolution against Iran would allow Russia to deliver an S-300 surface-to-air defensive missile battery that it had sold to Iran.

In a sudden change of plan, Russia has now suspended delivery indefinitely. Iran, of course, is protesting, and urges Russia "to stand by its commitments."
