U.S. Has Plans for X-Band Radar in Middle East

June 2, 2010 :: Reuters :: News

As part of an accelerating policy first started during George W. Bush's presidency, the U.S. plans to base a second X-Band radar installation in the Middle East (there is currently an X-Band unit it Israel's Negev desert). This would allow better coordination of regional PAC-3 and THAAD installations. Recent purchasers of PAC-3 systems (with more future purchases purportedly in the works) include Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. A linked regional missile defense umbrella would help counter the threat from Iranian ICBMs, and would consist of PAC-3s and THAAD systems on the ground and offshore Aegis missile destroyers in nearby waters.

It is yet unclear which country in the region would host the X-Band radar. (Article)
