Inouye Seeks Funding for Kauai Aegis Ashore Test Range

November 10, 2009 :: The Hill :: News

Daniel Inouye, the Democratic Senator from Hawaii who chairs the Senate's Appropriations Committee, is pushing for $68.5 million in funding from the 2009 missile defense appropriation in order to fund an Aegis Ashore test facility at the Barking Sands Pacific Missile Range on Kauai. Co-sponsors include Tim Johnson (D-SD), and Thad Cochran (R-MS).

Inouye's case is helped by a letter sent to John McCain (R-AZ) and Carl Levin (D-MI) by MDA Director Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly, requesting authorization of the same funding. O'Reilly insists that the funding is necessary if the U.S. is to move forward with the Obama administration's new plan for a European missile shield, which will include land-based SM-3 interceptors that will buttress Aegis missile destroyers.

In addition to providing SM-3 testing capabilities beyond the Navy's sea-based Aegis system, Lt. Gen. O'Reilly also stressed the possibility of the site providing additional missile defense capabilities for the island chain. (Article)
