88% of Americans in Favor of Missile Defense

July 29, 2009 :: MDAA :: News

The Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance has released the results of its commissioned poll on missile defense. 77% of Americans "strongly support" missile defense, and 11% support it, for a total of 88%.

Some other interesting numbers:

  • The percentage of the public that strongly approves of missile defense has increased by eight points since 2007; the percentage of the public that approves of missile defense has risen by seven points.

  • Despite the high general level of support for missile defense, Americans only oppose the planned $1.2 billion cut to the nation's missile defense budget by 52-42%. This statistic is perhaps suggestive of the commonly encountered but incorrect assumption that America has already fielded an effective missile defense system. Contrarily, or even additionally, it might also suggest that a public that strongly favors missile defense nonetheless thinks it must be postponed until further economic recovery.

  • 55% of Americans believe space-based missile defenses are appropriate if they would mean more effective defense and more security. This is an eight-point jump from 2008.
