North Korea Warns Against Interference with "Satellite" Launch

March 9, 2009 :: News

North Korea has threatened a counterstrike against the United States, Japan, or South Korea in the event of interference with an upcoming "satellite" launch.  "Prompt countersrikes by the most powerful military means" would follow any interference, stated a spokeman for the Korean People's Army.  If missile defenses are used to destroy the missile on which the satellite is fired, North Korea could retaliate against both the interceptors and their launching facilities, as well as "the strongholds" of the responsible countries.

The announcement takes place within the larger framework of South Korean and U.S. military exercises during March.  North Korea's "Korean People's Army" is "fully combat-ready" and has been instructed to "deal merciless retalitory blows" should the U.S. or South Korea incur "into the sky and land and seas of the DPRK even an inch."  The United States has also said that it stands ready to intercept a North Korean missile aimed at the United States. (Article)
