South Korea To Beef Up Defense

June 14, 2004 :: Defense News :: News

Defense News reports that South Korea is planning to boost defense expenditures by 13.4 percent in the coming year as they attempt to adjust its defense posture against North Korea in light of the U.S. intention to cut the deployment of 37,000 American troops in South Korea by one third.
        The South Korean Defense Ministry is looking to fund airborne reconnaisance, new surface-to-air missiles and upgraded communications surveillance equipment. To counter the North Korean artillery threat, South Korea would also like to purchase new fighter jets, advanced armored vehicles, Aegis-equipped destroyers and integrated weapon systems.
