Russia Tests Tochka (SS-21) Missile

Russia has again test fired its Tochka (SS-21) short range ballistic missile. According to a transcript taken from Russian television on May 31, the missile traveled a mere 20 km. The Tochka has a range of 70km, and the Tochka-U, or SS-21B, has a range up to 120km, however.

Excerpt of transcript from Russian television, NTV Mir:

        

A Tochka missile was taken out to the launch position. According to specialists, this is the most powerful non-nuclear weapon, and is designed for sudden, lightning attacks. The observers were unable to see the missile explode. The target was destroyed 20 km from the launch site. However, confirmation was received of the [success of the] operation. The launch was observed for the first time not only by military cadets, but also a number of officers. Veterans were also invited to the firing.
