Faced with the menace of German rearmament in the 1930s, Winston Churchill traveled all over England to persuade his countrymen of the need to respond to the emerging Nazi threat. Churchill and his colleagues called this effort “The Focus.” Today we need an “American Focus,” to persuade our fellow citizens of the need to build new defenses and take whatever military steps necessary to protect the United States from all threats—bioterrorism, suicide bombings, and the most deadly, ballistic missile attack.
MissileThreat.com is a project of The Claremont Institute devoted to understanding and promoting the requirements for the strategic defense of the United States. In the post-Cold War era, the proliferation of technology and resources for nuclear weapons, their means of delivery by ballistic missile, and other weapons of mass destruction has never been greater. Previous notions of deterrence such as Mutually Assured Destruction are no longer plausible. Despite the fall of the Soviet Union, the need to think clearly about these threats remains ever-present.
A robust and layered ballistic missile defense comprised of systems based on land, sea, air, and space has become an absolute necessity if we are to fulfill the constitutional duties to insure domestic tranquility and provide for the common defense.
Missilethreat.com seeks to present an overview of the threat posed by proliferation of ballistic missiles, the means to defend our nation against this threat, and resources to learn more about this increasingly salient debate.
